SLOW, SIMPLE
BY WALLACE CALEB BATES
Today was one of those days that reminded me how much meaning can be found in the simplest moments.
I had a late breakfast at Cracker Barrel with my mother and grandparents, and it was more than just a meal. It was time spent together, sharing conversation and laughter.
Our waitress was especially friendly. Just by the way she spoke, she made me feel welcome.
There is something about a warm smile and a kind word that lingers, even after the moment has passed.
While we were there, we met someone whose grandchildren called them Nana, the same name I call mine.
It was a small connection, but it stuck with me. It reminded me that we are all woven into a bigger story and that even in the most ordinary places, little moments of familiarity and shared experience bring people together.
The rest of the day was quiet. I let myself rest, took a long-overdue nap, and read. It was refreshing in a way that only stillness can be.
Not every day has to be filled with significant events to matter. Sometimes, it is the kindness of a stranger, the recognition of something familiar in someone else's story, the way a good meal with family feels like home.
Today was a reminder that these small things have a lasting impact, and I am grateful for that.
